The Preschool at Mulberry Bush Day Nursery

Preparing your little learner for Reception and beyond

Preparing your little one for school

The Preschool at Mulberry Bush Day Nursery supports children aged 3–4 years, helping them develop the skills, confidence and independence needed for a smooth transition to school.

At this stage, children are eager learners, and our experienced staff carefully balance play-based learning with more structured activities.

All staff working in the Preschool Room are qualified, highly committed and carefully vetted, including police checks and references. They bring energy, enthusiasm and a genuine passion for early education, creating a positive and motivating learning environment.

A structured yet playful environment

The Preschool is arranged to promote independence, collaboration and choice, with clearly defined learning areas and easy access to resources. Children are encouraged to plan their own play, make decisions and take increasing responsibility for their learning.

We operate at a minimum staff-to-child ratio of 1:8, enabling our team to support group learning while remaining responsive to individual needs. In practice, our ratios frequently exceed national guidelines, particularly to ensure appropriate support for children with additional needs.

The key-person system continues to play an important role, ensuring children feel supported as expectations gradually increase.

Learning and development in preschool

All learning is guided by the EYFS Curriculum, with a strong focus on communication, early literacy and numeracy, problem-solving and social development. Children take part in both planned group activities and extended periods of free play, helping them build focus, resilience and teamwork.

Activities include:

  • Arts, crafts, drawing and model making
  • Role play, storytelling and imaginative play
  • Music, singing, dancing and drama
  • Board games, puzzles and construction
  • Early writing, mark making and number activities
  • Cooking, gardening and growing projects
  • ICT and interactive learning tools
  • Outdoor games, parachute play and physical challenges

Tracking progress and next steps

Your child’s key person continuously monitors development and adapts learning experiences accordingly. Progress is recorded in development files and learning journals, including artwork, photographs and observations. These records are shared regularly and formally discussed during parents’ evenings.

With your permission, this information is shared with your child’s next educational setting to support continuity and ensure their next steps are carefully planned.
